Vekovima čovekova prirodna radoznalost za ljudsko telo dovodila je do stvaranja raznih instrumenata od kojih su mnogi slični današnjoj dijagnostičkoj opremi. Prvi veliki napredak u endoskopiji učinjen je u 19. veku. Filip Bocini (Phillip Bozzini, 1773–1809) opisao je 1806. godine instrument koji vizuelizuje unutrašnjost mokraćne bešike i nazvao ga lichtleiter .
